The Internet has quickly become an indispensable resource for millions of people. But Internet usage also requires responsibility and savvy to avoid its inherent dangers and pitfalls. Psychologist Larry Rosen, co- author of Techno Stress: Coping With Technology @ Work, @ Home, @ Play (John Willey & Sons) and Parry Aftab, author of The Parent's Guide to Protecting Your Children in Cyberspace (McGraw-Hill) offer these tips for safe and responsible Internet usage for you and your teenagers. 1. Educate yourself. Many parents feel intimidated by technology and realize their kids know more about it than they do. when this happens you can start to feel an imbalance of power in you relationship. Take and Internet 101 class at your local library to bring you up to speed, or have your teenage walk you through the basics. 2. Establish rules in your home about computer usage. Hold a family meeting to discuss the computer's use in your home--what's acceptable, what's not, and the consequences for improper usage.
