An Open Letter to Fathers

The day you began to be called Dad was truly a wonderful day in your life. After the long months of waiting, the day finally arrived and off you went with Mom to the hospital. There was more waiting and then it happened. You might have waited in another place with family and friends with you, or you might have been in the delivery room. Either way, the miracle of birth took place and the doctor said to a beaming you, "You have a son (or daughter)!"
Do you remember how you felt? How did you feel when you looked upon that little face for the first time? What thoughts went through your mind as you held your child for the first time? You were so happy, so humbled, so proud, so blessed. You no doubt knew that this child was a gift from God. David said, "Children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb is his reward (Ps. 127:3).
You must have also thought of your new responsibilities--not only to provide food, clothing, and shelter for the child, but to also train, educate and help the child to develop into a good person. There is no greater responsibility given to a father than this: "And you fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord" (Eph. 6:4). As the years went by you were involved in the activities of your child. There were school activities, ball games, scouts, sleepovers, family outings, and wants which often outran needs.
