leave father and mother and cleave (cling) to each other. They become "one flesh" --Genesis 2:24. No other earthly relationship is to take precedence over the marriage relationship. 6. Is this person committed to God first? Although the marriage relationship comes first among earthly relationships, one's commitment to God is above all. It is a great blessing to your marriage if your mate is first committed to God. You can rest assured that if your mate puts God first, he or she will never leave because that would be contrary to God's will. In fact, according to God's will, your mate will always strive to love you. Therefore, it is important that your mate love the Lord with all his heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:36-38). 7. How well do you communicate with each other? Couples may do a lot of talking, but have unhealthy communication patterns. James 1:19 gives a healthy communication pattern: "be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to wrath." Courtesy in communication is healthy for a relationship. Proverbs 16:24 states that "pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and heath to the bones." Honesty in communication is a necessity (Colossians 3:9). 8. Optimism is a tremendous asset in a relation
